In the context of a global competition for influence in Africa, European countries without historical ties to the continent, such as Romania, are also rethinking their diplomatic and commercial relations. Romania adopted a National Strategy for Africa in 2023, and former president Klaus Iohannis undertook a tour of several African countries. The European Union also aims to become the "main partner" of Africa, during a summit with the African Union that will take place in Angola. European countries, including Estonia, Finland, and Hungary, are also improving relations with Africa, trying to distance themselves from their colonial past. These initiatives have led to significant increases in trade, and European diplomats emphasize that they are not perceived as oppressors, but as equal partners.
