The Bucharest Tribunal ruled in favor of journalist Emilia Șercan in the criminal case brought against historian Adrian Cioroianu, accused of disclosing secret information related to his investigation into Mircea Geoană's doctoral thesis.

The court found that Cioroianu committed the offense of disclosing non-public information, issuing him a warning and ordering him to pay moral damages of 5,000 lei, along with court costs. Cioroianu requested the anonymization of his name in the court documents. Emilia Șercan emphasized that, although he was sanctioned, Cioroianu did not receive a criminal penalty, being considered an unconvicted offender.

The journalist stated that she hopes this action will encourage other journalists to protect their work and seek justice in similar cases. The ruling is not final and can be appealed.
