Elena Lasconi warns that canceling the election has turned Călin Georgescu into a political “martyr”

Elena Lasconi, the former presidential candidate who reached the second round, believes that Călin Georgescu could still have a political future following the cancellation of the presidential election. She made the statement on Saturday on Digi24.

Lasconi argued that the authorities had turned Georgescu into a “martyr” and described the annulment of the election as “the worst thing” to have happened in Romania, as well as a major blow to democracy.

The former candidate said that, if the election had not been canceled, she would have defeated Călin Georgescu, who would then have disappeared from the political forefront. “Georgescu was in the dustbin of history,” Lasconi said, arguing that the country’s political and economic situation would have been more stable, even if the budget deficit had remained a problem.

She explained that many voters who support Georgescu are people acting in good faith, disappointed by the traditional parties and corruption in politics. In her view, they have not found a credible voice on the political scene, amid distrust in politicians and the perception that they are primarily seeking access to resources and power.
