Dominic Fritz, the president of USR, stated that the parties in the coalition want to solve the issue of judges' pensions and that the meeting with President Nicușor Dan is an opportunity for mediation. Fritz has abandoned the idea of a referendum on this matter, considering that there are chances to pass the reform through the vote of the Constitutional Court, where only one additional vote is needed. He emphasized that there is a consensus in the coalition for the elimination of special pensions, mentioning that USR proposes a transition period of 10 years and a pension of 70% of the last salary.
Fritz highlighted the importance of the legitimacy of the justice system in the eyes of citizens and pointed out that retiring at 50 years old is absurd in the current context. He also explained that the idea of a referendum was a safety measure, but now he believes that the reform can be adopted without it.
