Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara and president of USR, has definitively lost the lawsuit against the National Integrity Agency (ANI), which accused him of a conflict of interest. The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ) upheld the decision of the Timișoara Court of Appeal, validating the ANI report which found that Fritz personally benefited from an administrative decision, having a financial relationship with a creditor. This involves a three-year ban on holding public office, which could lead to the loss of his mayoral mandate.
Fritz contested the decision, arguing that he continued procedures initiated by his predecessor, but the court established that the mere existence of a personal interest can affect impartiality in the exercise of public office. The accusations refer to the approval of a Zonal Urban Plan in favor of a company owned by a local councilor who lent Fritz money during the electoral campaign. According to the legislation, the mayor's mandate can cease by law in the case of a conflict of interest, and the prefect can issue an order in this regard.
