DIICOT has reported an increase in spoofing fraud attempts, in which criminals use visual identities and phone numbers that imitate public institutions. They contact victims via SMS or phone calls, pretending to be the authorities and asking for personal data or payments under the pretext of checks. Institutions never ask for confidential information over the phone, and citizens are advised to be cautious and check the authenticity of communications. Attempts can be reported to the National Cyber Security Directorate.
