The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) of Romania announces a series of legislative changes aimed at modernizing interactions between drivers and authorities, by expanding the use of electronic means. Starting in 2026, most communications, including the transmission of documents and traffic sanctions, will be conducted online, thus reducing dependence on paper. The electronic identity card will play a central role, allowing for quick authentication and signing of electronic documents, having the same legal value as a handwritten signature.

Among the proposed measures are the presentation of the driving license in digital format through an official application, the transmission of contravention reports via email, and online access to photographs of the contraventions. Additionally, the surrender of the suspended license can be done electronically, and fines can be paid into a single Treasury account, facilitating the use of various payment methods. These measures will simplify and accelerate administrative processes for drivers, eliminating the need for trips to counters.
