A bill that provides additional protection measures for doctors and harsher penalties for those who assault medical staff was submitted on Monday in Parliament.

Recently, a doctor from the Borșa City Hospital was hit by the son-in-law of a patient while trying to resuscitate her, the incident occurring in the context of a surge in assaults against medical staff. Additionally, a doctor in Târgu Jiu was attacked by the parents of a young woman she was trying to save.

Prof. Dr. Răzvan Ene emphasized that assaults frequently occur in emergency units and other critical departments. A report from the College of Physicians shows that 85% of doctors have been verbally assaulted, and 10% physically.

In this context, Deputy Andrei Baciu proposed a bill to increase penalties by 50% for those who assault medical staff, aiming to deter violence in hospitals. Thus, threatening a doctor could lead to a sentence of up to 3 years in prison, while serious bodily harm could result in a maximum of 18 years.
