According to projections from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the population of Romania will reach 15.633 million people by 2080, a significant decrease from 19.043 million on January 1, 2025. This represents a reduction of 3.410 million people (-17.9%). The proportion of the young population (under 15 years) will decrease to 13.7%, while that of the elderly population (65 years and over) will increase to 25.9%.
At the beginning of 2025, 51.5% of the population will live in urban areas, and the average age will reach 42.8 years. The process of demographic aging is intensifying, with an aging index of 131.3 elderly people for every 100 young people. The natural increase will remain negative, with -104,100 people in 2025. Globally, the world population was estimated at 8.1 billion in 2023, with projections of growth up to 10.3 billion by the year 2080. Romania ranks 6th in the EU by population size.
