Romania had 7,957 libraries in 2025, 226 fewer than in 2024

In 2025, Romania recorded 7,957 libraries, 226 fewer than in the previous year, according to INS data. Of these, 7,877 were administrative units, and 3,306 operated in urban areas, having a book collection of 121 million volumes.


The number of active users was 2.4 million, most of whom came from school libraries. At the same time, visitors to museums, zoos, and other cultural institutions decreased by 341,000, reaching 18.1 million.


The network of museums numbered 786 units, with 33.8 million cultural goods. In contrast, performing arts institutions increased, having 323 units and 27,600 performances.


Cinemas attracted 11.2 million viewers, recording a similar number to that of 2024. Additionally, national film production reached 58 titles, and publishers released 1,884 magazines. In conclusion, Romania experienced a decrease in the number of libraries and cultural visitors, but an increase in the performing arts and cinema sector.
