Luduș City Hall has temporarily suspended the activity of the public library after the institution’s only remaining librarian resigned. The library has not been operating for approximately one month, and there is no bookstore in the town.
Mayor Ioan Cristian Moldovan explained that, a year and a half ago, the local administration cut 39 positions, 34 of which were occupied, in order to reduce expenses and loans accumulated following the co-financing of projects. The library then had three employees: two retired, while the last one recently ended her employment for personal reasons.
The librarian position has been opened for competition, and the city hall estimates that the institution will reopen within at most one month or one and a half months. The Mureș County Library granted the necessary approval and appointed representatives to the competition and appeals committees.
The authorities say that the town’s three schools have functioning libraries. Meanwhile, the public library’s premises are to be modernized through a National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) project, with laptops and tablets, with the city hall undertaking to maintain the investment for at least five years. Residents fear, however, that the institution could suffer the same fate as the Culture House, which has been closed for approximately three years.
