CSAT meeting, convened by Nicușor Dan, after a drone hit a building in Galați: "We will take proportional measures in relation to the Russian Federation"

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, announced on Friday that he convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) after a Russian drone hit an apartment building in Galați.

"I convened the meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense today at 11 a.m. to discuss the implications of the most serious incident that has affected national territory since the beginning of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine. We will take proportional measures in relation to the Russian Federation," announced Nicușor Dan, emphasizing that the event has a "precedent-free character" and "requires a firm, coordinated, and measured response — at the national, allied, and international level."

At the same time, he stated that "the decision not to engage the target was made because the conditions did not allow for its destruction without significantly endangering the safety of the civilian population." "My thoughts are primarily with the injured, their families, and the residents who experienced terrifying moments in their own homes. I thank them for the calm with which they responded to this situation and assure them of the full support of the Romanian state," the President of Romania added.

Measures taken by the President of Romania

Nicușor Dan also stated that all NATO allies and partners from the European Union have been informed about the incident, and communication with allied military structures is ongoing in real time.

Additionally, according to him, Romania has formally requested that allies deploy additional anti-drone capabilities on national territory to strengthen our defense and the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, in accordance with SACEUR's instructions.

Last but not least, the President stated that Romania will officially inform the United Nations Security Council about this "brutal and repeated violation of international law by the Russian Federation."
