Crin Antonescu said that although he supported the election of Traian Basescu in 2004, he did not do so with full conviction, but more out of a desire to bring about a political change. He emphasized that Adrian Nastase's regime had to be replaced, but he did not rule out the possibility that Nastase might have been a better option than Basescu, reflecting on the political context at the time.
