The Mureș County Police Inspectorate announced the opening of a criminal case for manslaughter, following the death of the mayor of Apold, Gabi Mureșan, a former football player. The incident occurred on July 8, 2026, when the police were notified that a 44-year-old man had entered a lake near the locality of Șaeș and had not resurfaced.
Rescue teams, including divers from Salvamont Târgu Mureș, found the man in a state of unconsciousness, and he was transported to the hospital, but later died. The Apold City Hall expressed condolences to the grieving family, highlighting Gabi Mureșan's dedication to the community.
Mureșan, born on February 13, 1982, had a notable sports career, playing for teams such as CFR Cluj and ASA Târgu Mureș, and also having selections in the national team of Romania.
