The Craiova City Hall, led by Lia Olguța Vasilescu, has been taken to court by dog and cat owners, as well as by NGOs, following the adoption of a decision that limits the number of pets to two dogs and two cats per apartment. The mayor explained that the court has had mixed decisions in similar cases, which complicates the enforcement of the law. Vasilescu emphasized that the decision was adopted to help families affected by unpleasant odors coming from neighbors' animals, but no sanctions could be applied due to the lack of clear legislation. She also mentioned the challenges encountered in managing stray dogs, including conflicts with NGOs that contest the culling activities. The City Hall has initiated a free sterilization campaign for owned dogs and will intensify checks to ensure compliance with the law regarding the sterilization and microchipping of animals. Vasilescu warned that private landowners will be fined if they do not control their animals, to prevent the uncontrolled breeding of stray dogs.
