The recent announcement by the Interior Ministry has caused confusion about the use of simple chip-free ID cards as travel documents. The new ID cards, which have started to be issued, are not valid for travel outside Romania under EU law. The only documents that can be used for international travel are the new chip-enabled electronic ID cards. Cards issued in the old format will remain valid until 2031.
