Timiș County’s district heating company has coal for the entire cold season, but warns that a gas shortage could lead to reduced or suspended heat supply
Colterm has sufficient coal reserves to provide heating throughout the cold season, but is facing problems securing gas supplies, the company’s special administrator, Cristian Amza, said on Thursday at the Timișoara Prefectural College meeting. He called for urgent government intervention, warning that without measures, the supply of heating could be limited or suspended in January and February.
Approximately 45,000 tonnes of coal are stored at the South CET plant, while another 150,000 tonnes have been contracted or are at various stages of procurement. According to Amza, these quantities cover the needs of the entire season. The South plant operates on coal with gas supplementation, and its start-up will be delayed as long as possible because of high prices and insufficient quantities available on the market.
The Central plant, powered exclusively by gas, has already been supplying heat to subscribers since October 19. Colterm has stored the quantity of gas intended for the population, which can be used starting November 1, but the company says it is short of approximately 250,000 MWh of surplus gas.
Amza considers the current prices unjustified and called on the Government to negotiate solutions with Romgaz, Transgaz, ANRE and the Ministry of Energy. In addition, coal train traffic from the Motru area is expected to be halted in February 2027, which is why Colterm is also preparing road shipments.
