Călin Georgescu, former presidential candidate, stated that 'the foundation of democracy is the will of the people, expressed freely through voting and protected by freedom of expression and the rule of law.' In the context of the withdrawal of the license of Realitatea Plus and the cancellation of the elections in December 2024, he believes that these actions represent a serious attack on democracy.
Georgescu emphasized that the closure of the station, known as 'The People's Television', is an abuse that raises questions about the respect for democratic rules. He mentioned that Romania is perceived negatively internationally, as a country where democracy has been affected.
The former presidential candidate noted that the decision to close was made during Holy Week "when every person is asked for repentance, to examine their own conscience and to avoid harshness and unfair judgment."
The National Audiovisual Council (CNA) decided to withdraw the license for Realitatea Plus based on the non-payment of fines from 2024, and Georgescu warned that any limitation of freedom of expression must generate reactions to defend fundamental rights.
