A farmer from Brașov County was detained for 24 hours by DNA prosecutors on suspicion of attempting to illegally obtain agricultural subsidies by declaring livestock numbers far higher than those actually present on his farm.
According to DNA, between May and September 2026, the man allegedly submitted documents to APIA – the Brașov County Center, claiming that he owned 429 sheep and 55 goats eligible for financial support. Investigators’ checks allegedly found, however, that the farm had only 151 sheep and no goats. The total discrepancy was 333 animals: 278 sheep and 55 goats.
Prosecutors say the farmer sought to obtain both European Union funds and money from the national budget, provided in the form of subsidies for livestock breeders. The alleged offense remained at the attempted stage, with the actions interrupted on September 11, when searches and on-site investigations were carried out.
Beginning on October 28, DNA ordered the initiation of criminal proceedings and the suspect’s detention. He is due to appear before the Brașov Tribunal on October 29, with prosecutors seeking 30 days of pretrial detention. The farmer is being investigated as a repeat offender and benefits from the presumption of innocence.
