The National Trade Union Bloc (BNS) warned that freezing the minimum wage in 2026 would constitute a serious violation of national and European legislation, risking an infringement procedure from the European Commission.
Trade unionists emphasize that this measure would lead to a decrease in purchasing power below the level of 2024, severely affecting the living standards of the most vulnerable employees.
BNS believes that the legal formula for calculating the minimum wage is correct and transparent, being agreed upon by all parties involved and aligned with European directives. Additionally, BNS leaders criticize the position of politicians in the governing coalition who oppose increasing the minimum wage in the context of high inflation.
Sorin Grindeanu, the interim leader of the PSD, mentioned that Romania could enter the "infringement zone" if the minimum wage is not increased.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan explained that such an increase could have a ripple effect on public sector incomes and small businesses, but acknowledged that the current minimum wage does not provide adequate comfort.
