The police officers from the Transport Safety Service in Constanța opened a criminal case after, at the end of last week, they were informed that two people in a boat had attempted to steal components from the sunken barges in the Danube, in the area of the locality Izvoarele.

At the scene, the police found that the barges showed no signs of cutting and had no missing components. The owner of the vessel, a 46-year-old man, was identified and taken in for questioning. Currently, the police are continuing investigations for attempted aggravated theft. Last week, four barges were sunk in the Danube to raise the water level in the area of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, and the area is now monitored by police and gendarmes to prevent further theft attempts.
