Police officers in Hunedoara conducted 18 searches in a case involving the theft of copper cable, causing damages of over 590,000 euros

Police officers from the Hunedoara Criminal Investigations Service conducted 18 home searches on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in a case involving repeated thefts of copper cable from the construction site of a power plant. Twelve men, who were employed at the site, are being investigated, and the estimated damage exceeds €590,000.

The searches took place at the homes of people in Deva, Hunedoara, Băița, Sântămăria-Orlea, Vețel, Vorța, Ilia and Simeria. Following the operations, investigators seized evidentiary materials, including pieces of copper cable and sums of money in Romanian lei and foreign currency.

The investigation began at the end of August, after representatives of a commercial company reported that cables stored on the construction site premises had gone missing. According to police, the suspects allegedly played different roles in the theft, transportation or sale of the cables.

Arrest warrants for questioning were issued for the 12 people. They were taken to the Hunedoara County Police Inspectorate headquarters for questioning. The investigation is being coordinated by a prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Hunedoara Tribunal and concerns offenses including theft, theft with particularly serious consequences, aiding and abetting theft, and handling stolen goods. All those involved benefit from the presumption of innocence.
