Recently, archaeologists Ion Tuțulescu and Carol Terteci discovered the foundation of an old church, believed to have been founded by Mircea the Elder, beneath the current church of the Annunciation in Râmnicu Vâlcea. This church, built in 1747, was erected on the ruins of an older church, destroyed during the Austro-Turkish conflict. The excavations revealed the structures of two previous churches, one from the 14th century and another from the 16th century.
The archaeologists found the foundations, altar, and iconostasis of the first church, thus confirming the legend about the foundation by Mircea the Elder. This discovery suggests that the area was important even during the medieval period, having connections with a princely court. The current church, a category A monument, is an example of Brâncovenesc architecture, with original paintings from the 18th century. This church is also known for the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, documented since 1789.
