The municipality of Arad is considering the introduction of free public transport, thus becoming the first city in Romania to implement this measure. Currently, the local administration is analyzing the legal framework and consulting the necessary normative acts to develop a draft resolution that will be submitted for approval to the Local Council.
This initiative comes as a reaction to the increase in local taxes and fees, aiming to encourage the use of public transport and to reduce pollution and road congestion. Mayor Călin Bibarț emphasized that Arad has a modern fleet of trams and electric buses, and the measure could contribute to a greener and safer city. The public transport network in Arad is one of the most extensive in the country, with 15 tram lines.
