The Orthodox calendar commemorates today Saint Simeon, bishop of Jerusalem, chosen by the Holy Apostles after the martyrdom of Saint James. Saint Simeon, the son of Cleopas and a relative of the Lord, was appointed bishop in the context of the Roman persecutions against Christians and the lineage of David. He suffered a martyr's death during the reign of Emperor Trajan, being persecuted for his faith. After many tortures, he was crucified, similar to Christ, and gave up his soul into the hands of God. On this day, the Church commemorates other saints as well, such as Saint John the Confessor, Saints Apostles Aristarchus, Mark, and Zeno, Saints Martyrs Puplius and Lollion, as well as Saint Eulogius. This feast emphasizes the importance of faith and martyrdom in the history of Christianity.
