Algeria has officially expressed its intention to import from Romania, during the year 2027, a volume exceeding 1,000,000 heads of sheep, including carcasses, according to ANSVSA.

This change, which marks a first, reflects a new trade strategy aimed at diversifying the export portfolio, moving from the exclusive export of live animals to that of chilled and frozen meat. This development is considered a major success of ANSVSA negotiations, allowing Romanian processors to add value to domestic products and to meet the Halal standards required by the Algerian market. Dr. Alexandru Nicolae Bociu, president of ANSVSA, emphasized that the goal remains to support Romanian producers by opening new markets. Algeria's decision to secure imports through early contracts confirms the quality of the Romanian livestock and will ensure constant transport flows from the port of Constanța. Exports of sheep to Algeria have significantly increased, from 321,040 heads last year to an estimated 500,000 by the end of this year.
