An 89-year-old woman died in a fire in Hunedoara. 12 people evacuated themselves because of the smoke

An 89-year-old woman died on Sunday in a fire that broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor of a block of flats in the town of Călan, Hunedoara County. Thick smoke engulfed the apartment and much of the stairwell, prompting 12 people, including a minor, to self-evacuate.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was raging and had spread to part of the roof. Fire crews from the Bretea Română and Hunedoara units responded to extinguish the flames, using two water-and-foam fire engines, an aerial ladder truck and a first-response and command vehicle. SMURD and County Ambulance Service crews were also dispatched to the scene.

The victim was found inside the apartment after firefighters entered the home. The fire was extinguished, and smoke was cleared from the stairwell using a special ventilation fan. Firefighters also checked neighboring apartments to determine whether they had been affected and to allow residents to return safely.

According to the Hunedoara County Emergency Situations Inspectorate, the probable cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit in a household appliance in the kitchen.
