The Court of Accounts identified 68 hospitals operating in buildings constructed before 1900, facing challenges in adapting to modern standards

An analysis by the Court of Accounts shows that 68 public hospitals in Romania operated, between 2014 and 2021, in buildings constructed before 1900. In 2026, these buildings are at least 127 years old, while some are more than two centuries old. The age of the infrastructure makes it more difficult to adapt the facilities to current requirements concerning safety, ventilation, medical circuits and the control of healthcare-associated infections.
The report analyzed 310 hospital healthcare units in the public system. Among the oldest buildings are those of “Sfântul Spiridon” Hospital in Iași, dating from 1756–1758, the Central Military Hospital in Bucharest, as well as facilities in Galați, Suceava, Ploiești, Craiova and Vâlcea. In the capital, Colțea, Filantropia and “Grigore Alexandrescu” hospitals also operate in historic buildings.
The age of a building does not automatically prove the existence of a higher number of nosocomial infections. However, the layout, ventilation, utilities and lack of modern isolation spaces may amplify vulnerabilities. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan provided funding for infrastructure modernization, laboratories and infection-prevention equipment, but Romania still lacks an updated national inventory of all hospitals housed in buildings more than 100 years old.
