In January, Maramureș County reported 21 cases of rabies, of which 11 were confirmed positive, according to the Sanitary-Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) of Maramureș. The virus was identified in seven cows, two dogs, and two foxes, in the localities of Codrul Butesei, Săpânța, and Sălsig. DSVSA emphasized that foxes and jackals are the main sources of rabies virus transmission to domestic animals.

Additionally, in the year 2025, ten cases of rabies were identified in the county, affecting cattle, dogs, cats, and foxes. Sheep farm owners in the affected areas are concerned about the presence of jackals, which can not only transmit the virus but can also attack domestic animals. Every spring, over 20 sheep farms move to the hilly and mountainous areas of Maramureș, according to estimates from the County Agricultural Directorate.
