The General Prosecutor’s Office has indicted 16 citizens of the Russian Federation, accused of using forged documents, aiding and abetting computer forgery, and aiding and abetting the forgery of official documents. The case concerns the use of forged citizenship certificates to obtain Romanian documents.
According to prosecutors, between February and July 2024, the defendants used certificates purportedly issued by Romanian diplomatic missions in Russia, Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova. The documents falsely attested to the acquisition of Romanian citizenship.
Based on these certificates, the defendants allegedly obtained the transcription of birth records, personal numerical codes, Romanian birth certificates, identity cards and passports. Some people who allegedly fictitiously provided them with registered residences in exchange for money are expected to have the sums obtained confiscated.
The prosecutor in charge requested the annulment of the forged certificates and all documents subsequently issued on their basis. Following the checks, 1,702 identity cards issued for the fictitious establishment of domicile have already been annulled. The indictment was sent to the Câmpulung Moldovenesc District Court. In the same case, six plea agreements had previously been concluded.
