Previously, the Prosecutor General’s Office sent 16 Russian citizens to trial, accused of having used forged citizenship certificates to obtain Romanian documents. According to the prosecutors, between February and July 2024, the defendants allegedly used certificates purportedly issued by Romanian diplomatic missions in Russia, Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Moldova to obtain transcriptions of birth records, personal identification numbers, birth certificates, identity cards, and passports; the prosecutor requested the annulment of both the counterfeit certificates and all documents subsequently issued on their basis.
In another case, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that two Russian citizens from Moscow and Saint Petersburg had been sent to trial for the use of forged documents after presenting Romanian authorities with citizenship certificates that they claimed had been issued in 2023 by the Romanian Embassy in Bratislava. The documents were allegedly used to transcribe Russian birth certificates at the Civil Status Service of Sector 6, and on their basis they allegedly obtained identity cards and electronic passports; the investigation also brought attention to the networks that allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of citizenship, including a HotNews investigation that mentioned a company from Bashkortostan that allegedly requested 7,500 euros for such documents.
