Netflix has released a three-part documentary about Matthew Perry’s life / The “Friends” co-stars, absent from the production

On October 27, 2026, Netflix released the three-part documentary “The One About Matthew Perry,” dedicated to the life and struggles of the actor known for his role as Chandler Bing in “Friends.” The production follows his childhood marked by loneliness, his first alcohol use at age 14, his dependence on medication, and his attempts at recovery.

The documentary’s notable feature is the absence of Perry’s five co-stars from the show’s main cast: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. Director Mary Robertson stated that the actors were invited to participate but chose not to appear. She explained that the decision does not reflect a lack of affection, but rather the personal way in which they are grieving.

The documentary series is based on testimonies from the actor’s family, friends, and colleagues. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, talks about her brother’s childhood and addiction, stating that he allegedly spent approximately seven million dollars on treatment and recovery. The production also presents the accident he suffered while filming “Fools Rush In,” after which Perry was given opioid painkillers.

Matthew Perry died in October 2023, at the age of 54. His death was associated with the acute effects of ketamine. The documentary attempts to portray him beyond the character of Chandler Bing, through the accounts of those who knew him before and after the success he achieved with “Friends.”
