Yasser Al-Misehal, the president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), announced his resignation on Sunday evening after Saudi Arabia was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. The national team finished last in Group H, obtaining only two points after a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde.
Al-Misehal acknowledged responsibility for this failure, stating that the result does not reflect the collective ambitions of the team. This was Saudi Arabia's third consecutive participation in the World Cup, but the team has been eliminated in the first round each time, except for the round of 16 in 1994.
The dismissal of coach Hervé Renard two months before the competition negatively affected the team's performance. Al-Misehal's departure marks the end of an era, and his tenure will be associated with Saudi Arabia's bid to host the World Cup in 2034.
