The Football Association of Wales has become the first federation to officially withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino, the current FIFA president, in light of his re-election for the 2027-2031 term. The decision was announced after Infantino's unsuccessful attempt to sell shares in the World Cup.

Representatives of the association mentioned that recent failures in governance, leadership, and communication have led to a loss of confidence in Infantino. Additionally, the association has promised to hold accountable those involved in the plan to sell the World Cup. Infantino abandoned the controversial plan to sell a share of FIFA after being criticized, and UEFA welcomed this decision.

Infantino, under pressure, is seeking a fourth term at the helm of FIFA, and the next president will be elected in March 2027 at the FIFA Congress in Morocco.

It remains to be seen whether the withdrawal of support from Wales will influence other associations to do the same.
