UEFA has opened a disciplinary investigation after Damien Doyle, Ireland’s fitness coach, was allegedly spat at by an Israeli player in the tunnel area at half-time during the Nations League match played in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The match ended 1-1, after Ireland had won the first encounter 3-0.

The two clashes were marked by tensions related to the war in Gaza. An Israeli journalist accused the Irish of racist abuse, an accusation dismissed as a “lie,” while Irish striker Adam Idah was allegedly racially abused by Israeli supporters. Ireland’s manager called on UEFA to intervene.
