“U” Cluj defeated CFR Cluj 3-1 on Thursday, October 8, in a postponed match from the fourth round of the SuperLiga, played in Cluj-Napoca. The victory earned the “red caps” three important points in the fight for the top positions in the standings.
CFR Cluj started the match better and opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Stefan Drazic, who scored from Andrei Cordea’s pass. The hosts went into halftime ahead after Dan Nistor and Iulian Cristea’s chances failed to beat Octavian Vâlceanu.
“U” Cluj quickly came back after halftime. Issouf Macalou equalized in the 52nd minute from the penalty spot, after a handball committed by Viktor Kun in the box. Five minutes later, Oucasse Mendy scored to make it 2-1, from Jovo Lukic’s cross. Macalou set the final score in the 77th minute, after Alexandru Chipciu’s pass.
CFR tried to reduce the deficit late on, but Ovidiu Perianu and Omic’s shots failed to hit the target. Following the result, “U” Cluj climbed to fifth place with 18 points, while CFR Cluj occupies eighth place with 13 points.
