The President of the USA, Donald Trump, intervened in the controversy affecting FIFA, stating that the organization would be making a 'terrible mistake' if it were to replace President Gianni Infantino.
Trump emphasized on his platform, Truth Social, that Infantino is a 'formidable' leader and that the recent success of the World Cup is largely due to his leadership.
In the context where Infantino is facing severe criticism after his abandoned plan to open FIFA to private investors, the UEFA, Concacaf, and AFC confederations issued an open letter calling for his departure.
Although it seemed that Infantino was heading towards an easy reelection, the current crisis has generated tensions among football families. Infantino proposed the creation of FIFA Forward Enterprise, a subsidiary valued at 20 billion dollars, which would involve selling shares to private investors, including a company associated with the Trump family.
The close relationship between Trump and Infantino was also highlighted by the awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to the American president.
