Ștefan Kovacs, known for his successes with Ajax, was recruited by the communist Securitate in October 1955, at the age of 35. His file contains 31 pages, covering the period 1955-1963, when he coached teams from Cluj. The recruitment was motivated by the desire to monitor the mood of the residents of the Rakoczi neighborhood and was carried out "based on patriotic feelings." Kovacs agreed to collaborate, committing to communicate information about subversive activities, using the pseudonym "Munteanu Vasile."
During his collaboration, he provided 34 informative notes, which were used in investigations, although he did not initiate contact with subversive elements. His information was essential for the political control of athletes, considering that the Securitate analyzed their social background and behavior in the context of international travels. The Securitate documents emphasize that Kovacs strived to fulfill his tasks, providing relevant information about various individuals.
