Serena Williams, at the age of 44, announced on social media her withdrawal from the doubles event at Wimbledon due to knee issues. She was set to compete alongside her sister, Venus Williams, at the All England Club, benefiting from a wildcard. Serena suffered an injury in the first round of singles, losing the match against Australian Maya Joint.
In an emotional post, Williams stated that she is saddened by her withdrawal, emphasizing that returning to the court was a gift and that the opportunity to play alongside Venus was extremely important to her. She also mentioned that, despite her efforts to prepare her knee, it is not ready for competition. Serena thanked the tournament team and fans for their support. She returned to the WTA circuit this year, playing doubles at the tournament in Queen's and in Berlin.
