The Romanian national team achieved its first victory in the main group I of the Handball World Championship, defeating Senegal 37-17 (21-7) in Rotterdam. The top scorers for Romania were Grozav with 9 goals and Boiciuc with 5, while Diawara was the best player of the opponents, with 5 goals. This victory gives the Romanian women 4 points in the group, however, their chances of reaching the quarter-finals were compromised after the defeat against Hungary (29-34). Romania will play its next match against Switzerland, aiming for a placement in the 9-12 positions.
In group I, matches are also taking place between Japan – Hungary and Denmark – Croatia. The Romanian team, coached by Ovidiu Mihăilă, qualified in main group I from preliminary group A, aiming for a final placement in the top 10. Romania has participated in all editions of the World Championship, having four medals in its record, and the current title holder is France, which won the final in 2023.
