Sorana Cîrstea was eliminated by Naomi Osaka from the Australian Open. It was her last appearance at the tournament in Melbourne, before the announced withdrawal for this year.

Naomi Osaka, ranked 17th in the WTA and seeded 16th, won in three sets, with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In the opening round, Sorana made a spectacular comeback against Eva Lys, whom she defeated in three sets. 

Osaka continues her journey in Melbourne and will face Australian Maddison Inglis, ranked 168th in the WTA, in the third round.

Romania is still represented in the main draw by Gabriela Ruse. The Romanian will meet Mirra Andreeva, an 18-year-old currently ranked 7th in the world.
