In a documentary made by L'Equipe, Michael Phelps shares his experiences related to the severe depression he lived through after his retirement from sports in 2012, after winning six medals at the London Olympics. Although he was revered as the best swimmer in the world, Phelps felt a deep void in his life, having suicidal thoughts. He confesses that, on that night, he had only 30 milligrams of sleeping pills, which saved him from a tragedy. With the help of his mentor, Bob Bowman, and a detox program, Phelps returned to competition and won new medals at the 2016 Olympics. However, he continues to struggle with depression and anxiety, having regular meetings with mental health specialists. Phelps emphasizes that his fight is an ongoing process, and managing these issues remains a priority in his life.
