Prince Harry has called on NATO to pay more attention to military personnel leaving the armed forces, particularly those returning wounded or ill from theaters of operation. The Duke of Sussex delivered the message via videoconference to NATO’s Military Committee in Brussels, as the founder of the Invictus Games.
Harry, a former serviceman who served for a decade and ended his military career in 2015, said that leaving the uniform affected his identity and sense of purpose. He said he felt fortunate to have found another way to serve by supporting wounded military personnel and veterans.
The Duke stressed that the alliance is made up not only of armies, but also of people, families and communities. He pointed out that the resources invested in military training must be complemented by programs for the period after service.
The Invictus Games, launched by Harry in 2014, bring together wounded or ill military personnel and veterans. The next edition will take place in Birmingham next year. Harry moved back to the United Kingdom last month, after settling in the United States with Meghan.
