McGregor has announced an initiative on Platform X calling for changes to the electoral nomination system, arguing that the current process limits the voice of the Irish electorate. He has launched a petition on change.org, which has garnered more than 6,000 signatures, and criticized the current prime minister Simon Harris. Under Ireland's constitution, independent candidates must have the backing of at least 20 MPs or four county councils to stand. Presidential elections are scheduled for November 11.
