Kylian Mbappé sparked a scandal in China after saying, in a recent interview, that his favorite meme is one in which his face is superimposed onto the body of Mao Zedong, the former leader of China. The French footballer said that the image makes him laugh and that he frequently uses it in conversations with friends.
The statements provoked critical reactions in China, especially after Mbappé described Mao Zedong as a dictator. Following the controversy, Real Madrid published a statement on Wednesday, October 28, apologizing to the Chinese people and to those who felt offended.
“Real Madrid CF wishes to apologize to the Chinese people for any discomfort caused by the recent statements made by our player, Kylian Mbappe. Our club has profound respect for China, its history, culture and citizens, as well as for the millions of Chinese fans who feel affection and admiration for Real Madrid. The club joins Kylian Mbappe’s public apology, through which the player expressed his regret for his words and reaffirmed his respect for the Chinese people. Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to the values of respect, coexistence and understanding between cultures and expresses its desire to continue strengthening the bonds of friendship and affection that unite it with China and its citizens,” the Spanish club stated on its official website.
Kylian Mbappe also apologized following the scandal he triggered. The Frenchman said that he did not intend to offend the Chinese people.
