The Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, the world number 1 in chess, achieved a remarkable performance in Doha, winning the world championship in blitz and securing his 20th world title. In the final, Carlsen defeated the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattorov after losing the first game, but made a strong comeback in the last matches. Although he had a difficult run in the qualifying stage, finishing in third place, Carlsen managed to win in the semifinals against the American Fabiano Caruana. He was also crowned world champion in rapid, thus completing a double victory. Carlsen now holds nine titles in blitz, six in rapid, and five in classical time controls. Although he relinquished his crown in 2023, he continues to be a prominent figure in chess, with plans to participate in a new world championship format recognized by FIDE, scheduled for 2026.
