Lionel Messi has officially become the worst penalty taker in World Cup history. In the match of the round of 16 against Egypt, Messi missed a penalty kick, marking his second missed penalty in the same edition of the tournament, after the one in the match against Austria in the group stage. This makes Messi the first player in history to miss two penalties in the same edition of the World Cup, without considering penalty shootouts.
He has also become the first footballer to miss a total of four penalties in final tournaments, having eight attempts. In his career, Messi has missed 34 penalties but has converted 116, thus demonstrating a notable efficiency in his executions.
