This makes Messi the first player in history to miss two penalties in the same edition of the World Cup, without considering penalty shootouts.

He has also become the first footballer to miss a total of four penalties in final tournaments, having eight attempts. In his career, Messi has missed 34 penalties but has converted 116, thus demonstrating a notable efficiency in his executions.
