Lamine Yamal responded to Kylian Mbappé’s comments about the Ballon d’Or winner, saying he does not feel the need to claim the award and is satisfied with his achievements this season. The Barcelona winger made the comments ahead of the Catalan side’s debut in the new Champions League campaign.
“I don’t think I need to beg for anything. I’m not thinking about what I deserve; everyone can believe what they want. I’m proud of everything I have achieved this year with the club and the national team,” Yamal said.
The Spanish footballer stressed that he had won the World Cup and the Spanish title, adding that he could not wish for more. Spain eliminated Mbappé’s France in the competition’s semifinals, winning 2-0.
Mbappé backed his Ballon d’Or candidacy on the basis of the goals he scored at the World Cup, where he became the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. Yamal finished second in the previous edition of the award, behind Ousmane Dembélé.
At 19, Yamal is also considered the favorite for the award given to the best young player, which he could win for the third consecutive time. At the same time, he has set his sights on winning the Champions League with Barcelona, who begin their campaign against Feyenoord. Hansi Flick believes the team has the quality needed to challenge for the trophy.
