Julia Sauter scored 52.67 points in the short program at the Olympic Games in Milan Cortina, setting a personal record of 63.16 points. The Romanian skater, ranked 19th in the world, had a difficult performance, missing the first jump, a triple Lutz, and executing only a single Lutz.

Despite a panic attack before the competition, Sauter managed to regain her focus and complete the program. "I am glad that I qualified for the free program and I will fight," she said. At the end of the short program, the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto and Mone Chiba were leading the standings, followed by American Amber Glenn. Alysa Liu, the reigning Olympic champion, is not participating in the competition in Prague.
