The Romanian tennis player Irina Begu, aged 35, suffered a defeat in the first round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Madrid, being defeated by the German Laura Siegemund, with 6-4, 6-0, after one hour and 26 minutes of play.
This was Begu's first competition after a nine-month break due to an injury. With this defeat, Begu, ranked 182nd in the WTA, leaves with a check of 21,285 euros and 10 WTA points for participation. Siegemund, aged 38 and ranked 47th in the WTA, extends her lead in head-to-head matches, now having 5-1 against the Romanian. Other Romanian players are also in the main draw of the tournament, such as Sorana Cîrstea and Jaqueline Cristian, who qualified directly for the second round. Gabriela Ruse will play against the Croatian Antonia Ruzic in the first round.
